CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to Study
All human interactions are a form of communication. In this highly competitive business world, nothing can be achieved without effective communication with employers, employees, clients, suppliers, and customers. If you look among the most successful business people in the world, you will see people who have mastered the art of communication. Business all over the world today is very challenging. To stay profitable in the highly challenging and competitive global market economy all factors of production (that is men, machine and material), should be wisely managed. Among the factors of production, human resource constitutes the biggest challenge because unlike inputs, employee management demands skilful handling of thoughts, feelings and emotions to secure highest productivity. Effective organizational communication plays an important role in this challenge (Abifarin, 1997).
Communication has critical influence on work groups and organizational communication is a channel to flow information, resources, and even policies. Organizational communication can be broadly defined as communication with one another in the context of an organisation as cited in. This type of communication, in turn, includes activities of sending and receiving message through various layers of authority, using various message systems, and discussing various topics of interest to the group we belong to or the company we work for. Organizational communication research has mainly been conducted both in the business management field and in the communication field (Eunju, 2009).
Internal communication has long been recognised as an important mechanism for managers and stakeholders to an organisation. Researchers in the field of public administration have provided little knowledge about internal organizational communication and its roles and effects on organisational performance as well as employees’ performance. The central role of internal communication in the organisation has therefore been recognized and in recent years has gained a lot of attraction and attention and it is on this note that the study seeks to research on the effect of internal communication on organisational performance.
1.2 Problem Statement and Justification of Study
The sustainability of an organization is based on effective communication among employees and relationships develop based on effective communication. Effective internal communication helps employees to coordinate activities, and achieve goals. It is relevant in socialization, decision-making, problem solving and change-management processes and ensures that members of an organization are working towards a common goal.
NABCO Company Ltd. is facing a number of challenges ranging from cumbersome reporting lines, which are difficult for the employees to abide to such as conflicting authorities, and obligations thereby making some subordinates become answerable more than a superior. Intra- communication facilities such as intercoms and memos are mostly ignored by the company and this slows down the rate at which information should circulate and flow within the organisation and among staffs/employees. NABCO Company Ltd. continues to find the most effective channels for communicating with their constituents but is yet to establish a possible concrete and reliable strategy to tackle this problem. However, the absence of such a strategy on effective internal communication channel tends to under-utilize the expertise and vital information from the employees and staff, which could be a critical input for formulating an effective communication strategy to reduce or eliminate apathy in performing their roles.
Considering these problems, the study seeks to attempt to provide answers to the following questions:
- What is the effect of internal communication in NABCO Company Ltd.?
- What is the communication tools used in NABCO Company Ltd?
