IMPLICATIONS OF FISH ACTIVITIES ON POPULATION GROWTH IN IDENAU MUNICIPALITY
Abstract
Fishing is an important economic activity in Idenau but illegal and unregulated fishing by foreign companies has depleted fishing stock and worsen maritime security. It occurrence produces diverse effects on fishermen and buyer sellam. The aim of this research therefore was to assess “Implications of Fish Activities on Population Growth in Idenau Municipality”
The study used a survey design to collect and analyze the required data. Data collection was done using questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and from secondary sources like text books and scientific articles from the internet. Data analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques.
Chi square was used to test the hypothesis. The results showed that Fish production is an important economic activity in many countries, including Cameroon. The country’s coastline and rivers provide ample opportunities for fishing, which is a major source of livelihood for many communities. However, the impact of fish production on population growth is often overlooked. This thesis explores the relationship between fish production and population growth in the town of Ideanau, Cameroon.
The study analyzes the impact of fish production on the local economy and the population growth of the area. It also examines the factors that contribute to the growth of the fishing industry and its impact on the local community. I also found that both industrial and artisanal fishing is dominated by foreign vessels and crew.
An estimated 70 industrial fishing vessels that operate in Cameroonian maritime area come from mainly China and Nigeria. Some operate in partnership with Cameroonian entrepreneurs though details of such alliances are murky. Meanwhile over 80% of artisanal fishers come from Nigeria, Ghana, Benin and Togo. Fisheries officers are concerned that this foreign dominance exacerbates illegal fishing and fisheries crime practices.
This is because they explore their transnational social and economic networks to enhance illicit activities. For instance, small-scale fishing entrepreneurs bring in workers from their countries of origin, sometimes illegally. They are sometimes subjected to poor working and living conditions and have no labour protection.
Possible solutions in order to mitigate the problems of fish production were recommended. These include: the government and the local council should pass laws that forbid indiscriminate catch or the catch of immature fishes, the scientist should experiment with artificial fertilization of eggs in special hatcheries and then transfer them to the breeding ground, the fishermen should launch a campaign on regular inspection of coastal fishing, lastly the banned of big fishing companies.
