IMPLEMENTATION OF THE UNIVERSAL CODE FOR REGIONAL AND LOCAL GOVERNANCE IN THE ANGLOPHONE REGION OF CAMEROON
Abstract
The primary aim of this research was to investigate the Implementation of the General Code of Regional and Local Authorities for the North West and South West areas that have suffered from armed conflict for many years. Four research inquiries and hypotheses steered the study. To facilitate this, the descriptive survey research methodology was employed. The focus was on attorneys practicing in Buea.
The simple random sampling method was utilized to select a sample of 300 participants. A questionnaire titled: Implementation of the General Code of Regional and Local Authorities for the North West and South West areas was deployed to gather information from the respondents.
The demographic data was analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages, while inferential statistics of regression analysis was applied to test the research hypotheses. Findings indicated that a majority of participants believe that entities in the Anglophone regions have been afforded increased financial and political autonomy due to the successful application of the General Code of Regional and Local Authorities.
They also expressed the opinion that the General Code of Regional and Local Authorities has effectively tackled most Anglophone concerns, particularly the marginalization of Anglophones in socio-economic and political aspects. Consequently, the researcher suggested that the government should enhance regional equity, especially in the allocation of financial resources, address the root causes of Anglophone issues, and bolster the execution of the General Code of Regional and Local Authorities.
