THE IMPLEMENTATION OF DEMOCRACY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE IN CAMEROON
Abstract
The basic basis of democracy in any region of the world should be founded on serving the interests of the people, and this should be the government’s obligation. However, the situation in Cameroon is quite different because of some factors such as a lack of good governing ideas, a lack of progress, and abuse of people’s rights and privileges guaranteed by the constitution, which strains the relationship between democracy and good governance because democracy does not always translate to the eventual realization of good governance.
This study emphasizes on the significance of institutionalizing a free democratic environment in which people’s attitudes, institutions, and ideas for Cameroon’s corporate interest are safeguarded. The study’s aims include the following: the primary goal is to assess the influence of democracy on the Buea Municipality.
The specific objectives also include identifying the characteristics of democracy in good governance, examining the extent to which democracy and good governance have aided development in the Buea Municipality, and accessing the government measures put in place to improve the efficiency of democracy and good governance in the Buea Municipality.
The radical democratic theory, which called for equality among other democratic characteristics, and the representation theory, which advocated for adequate representation of the local people, were employed in the study.
The research design employed is a combination of the case study and descriptive designs, and it entails an intense and thorough description and analysis of a single incident on a broader scale. The pivot survey, primary sources, and secondary sources were utilized to collect data using the simple random sample approach.
According to the findings, the process of democracy and good governance is truly in existence since local people engage in the identification of projects, which suggests that they participate in decision making, albeit in a restricted fashion that requires a lot of modification.
According to the debates and conclusions of this study, democracy, and good governance are badly implemented in the Buea municipality, as evidenced by the inadequate representation of the people, poor resource management, embezzlement, and violations of human rights.
