THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE VARIABILITY ON COCOA PRODUCTION IN TOMBEL
Abstract
The important role of cocoa production in this division could be clearly identified during the period of harvest which begins in June. The impact of climate variability is mostly strong in developing countries.
Rainfall and temperature data were analysed by fitting regression lines in an attempt to determine their trends and during the study period and possible sampling farmers, often have limited knowledge of modern techniques and management skills as well as limited access to finance, that will allow them purchase input supplies and quality planting materials.
There is the problem of pests and disease that affects cocoa. This disease destroys the pods of cocoa, making them turn black. There are poor transport facilities where farmers can transport their crops to the market from the farm area.
These farmers face this difficulty due their issues of bad roads. They do carry these products either on their heads in baskets. The trend and drivers of cocoa production in Tombel. Methodology, the chapter takes into consideration the research design, the target population, sample population type and source of specific statistical tests.
These results revealed that increased rainfall about 3000ml per annum decrease cocoa yield, findings on the adaptation strategies used by agriculturalists are in the work of Boer et al (2000), who opined that in the 21st century, change has contributed to increase pests and disease in agricultural field.
A lot efforts are needed to address some of the threat of cocoa production in Tombel such as climate action, increase infrastructure as farm to market roads, use of organic measures in agriculture, education of the farmers through extension source and provision of short-term loans to the farmers.
Access to education is another challenge that most cocoa farmers face, in some area a lack of quality basic education is critical issue, affecting everything from farmer labor practices and business decision to youth migrating to urban areas and hindering the future growth of cocoa farming.
Functional literacy, and agricultural livelihoods training programs that improve access to quality and relevant education are essential to sustain cocoa–growing communication in the long- term. Since the majority of cocoa farmers are under educates these equally hindered their productivity.
