ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BUEA MUNICIPALITY
Abstract
This study was designed to investigate “environmental factors on students’ academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea Municipality”. The objectives that were used for the study were: to find out the influence of: traffic flow on students’ academic achievement in secondary school in Buea Municipality,
Noise pollution on students’ academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea Municipality, Proximity on students’ academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea Municipality and Transportation on students’ academic achievement in secondary school in Buea Municipality.
The research design use for the study was the descriptive research. The sample size was 88 students selected from three secondary schools in Buea municipality. The questionnaire was used to obtain information from correspondents and data were analyzed descriptively using percentages and frequencies and inferentially using person’s product correlation.
The following results were obtained; the findings revealed that there is a strong negative correlation between traffic flow and students’ academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea Municipality, the findings revealed that there is a moderate negative correlation between noise pollution and academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea Municipality.
Findings from research question three holds that there is a strong negative correlation between proximity, (distance to the school especial far distance) on students’ academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea Municipality and finally, findings from research question three holds that there is a strong negative correlation between transportation on students’ academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea Municipality.
Based on the findings on research question it was recommended that amongst others that It is recommended that, the Ministry of Education and Vocational Trainings and the ministry of transport should make sure that official transportation system is offered to students during morning and evening in the big cities in Cameroon so that students be motivated with classroom learning during morning session and to avoid from ant-social practices; secondly, the school timetable should be re-scheduled especially in the big cities to start late morning and finish early evening so that students may not miss some of lessons and avoid reporting home at late hours. Further study should be on the effect of traffic congestions on degree of students’ learning concentration approach.
Also it was recommended that it is recommended that school administrators and teachers should design programs that would address students’ challenges in attending school relative to their house-to-school distance while the government provides infrastructures that would address concerns on long-distance travel of the students.
