THE EFFECT OF EMPLOYEE COMMITMENT ON EMPLOYEE JOB PERFORMANCE OF MICROFINANCE INSTITUTIONS IN CAMEROON
Abstract
No organization in today’s competitive world can perform at peak levels unless each employee is committed to the organization’s objective and work as an effective member (Santra and Mishra, 2013). As such, management has to ensure that employees remain motivated enough such that their commitment is high and hence their performance.
This study sought to examine the extent to which employee commitment affects employee job performance of employees in microfinance institutions in Buea, the South West Region of Cameroon. Specifically, the study examines affective commitment, continuance commitment and normative commitment and their effects on employee job performance. Using a causal survey design, questionnaires were administered to 172 employees of microfinance institutions in Buea using the simple random sampling technique.
The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 was used to test the effect of the relationship between the variables under study. This study found a positive significant effect of affective, continuance and normative commitment on the employee job performance of microfinance institutions in Buea.
It was concluded that employee commitment significantly affects employee job performance. The management of microfinance institutions might therefore strive to increase employee commitment with better incentives and motivations to encourage them stay, so as to minimize the risk of turnover of good employees.
