EFFECT OF TEACHER’S CHARACTERISTICS ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN THE BUEA MUNICIPALITY
Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate “the effects of teacher characteristics on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in the Buea municipality”. The study was guided by the following specific objectives. To examine the effect of teacher’s academic qualification on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in the Buea municipality.
To investigate the effect of teacher’s teaching experience on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in the Buea municipality. To investigate the effect of teacher’s knowledge of subject matter on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Buea municipality.
The study made use of descriptive survey a sample size of 70 teachers from Community Christian College Muea, Government Secondary School Bomaka, St. Joseph College Sasse. The questionnaire was used to collect data. For the statistics was used to analyze the use of simple percentages, tables, figure and frequency.
The findings of this study revealed that teacher’s characteristic affects students’ academic performance in secondary schools in the Buea municipality. Based on these findings, the following recommendations were made; teachers be a significant target for teacher education reforms and by doing so, it will improve the academic performance of the students as much as possible.
