THE EFFECT OF LEADERSHIP STYLE ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED PUBLIC INSTITUTION IN BUEA
Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of leadership styles on the performance of some selected public institutions in Fako-Division. Transformational and Transactional leadership styles were considered relevant with an emphasis on the mediating effects of employees’ commitment in this relationship.Asurvey research designed was used and data was collected through questionnaire from a sample of 100 respondents of these institutions who were selected using the stratified sampling techniques.
The data was analyzed using the descriptive statistics, and regression analysis. Outcome of this study revealed that there is a positive and weak relationship between transformational leadership styles and performance. The positive sign of the correlation value implies that performance is likely to be enhanced when transformational leadership is carried out and less likely to increase if transformational leadership is ignored in public institutions in Fako.
Furthermore, the study concluded that there is a positive and moderately significant relationship between transactional leadership style and performance. The positive sign of the correlation value implies that performance is likely to be enhanced transactional leadership is carried out and less likely to increase if transactional leadership is ignored in public institutions in Fako.
Also, it was found that there is a positive and significant relationship between employee commitment and performance. The positive sign of the correlation value implies that performance is likely to increase when employees are committed and less likely to increase if employees in public institutions in Fako are not committed.
In a nutshell, the study found that only transactional leadership style has a significant effect on the performance of public institutions in Fako. Furthermore, the study found a significant relationship between employee commitment and the organizational performance of public institutions in Fako.
