DETERMINANTS OF UTILIZATION OF MATERNAL HEALTHCARE SERVICES AMONG WOMEN OF REPRODUCTIVE AGE IN THE BUEA HEALTH DISTRICT
Abstract
Maternal health services are services rendered to a woman during pregnancy, delivery and postnatal period. Regular use of quality maternal health services reduces maternal morbidity and mortality. This study was aimed at evaluating the determinants of utilization of maternal health services in the Buea health district.
Community based descriptive cross sectional study, supplemented with qualitative data was conducted in the Buea health district. A total of 350 women of reproductive age group, who gave birth within the last two years were purposively included. A multistage sampling technique was used to recruit the participants. The instruments used for data collection were questionnaires and interview guide. The questionnaires were coded and the responses entered by the use of kobo collect and stored in a spreadsheet by the use of SPSS (22.0). Data was analyzed using SPSS version 26. Frequency tables, bar charts, pie charts, chi square were used for categorical variables. Multivariate analysis was used to use to assess the relationship between independent and outcome variables. A thematic analysis was used for qualitative data, by used of MAXQDA software.
The results showed that 97% of the participants had at least one antenatal care visits. As concerns the use of ANC services, 83.7% had at least four ANC visits. The study showed that about 99.3% of the women had given birth in the health institution.
From the assessment of the quality of services rendered, it shows that 73% of the services rendered at the facility were good. 77% of the participants were satisfied with the services rendered. Residence and marital status were found to be independently associated with maternal service health utilization, p-value 0.003 at 95% CI.
Service utilization was very good. Good numbers of clients were satisfied with the service that was received and another reasonable number thought the service provided was good. However, the population still needs to be encouraged to use maternal health services.
