ASSESSMENT OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND ITS ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONGST ADULT HIV/AIDS PATIENTS RECEIVING HAART
Abstract
HIV/AIDS a disease that is known to affect an individual not only physically but also mentally, socially, and financially, thereby causing high rates of morbidity and mortality amongst millions individuals living with the disease despite availability, accessibility and overall coverage of Anti-retroviral therapy.
Maintaining a good nutritional status is critical to support the overall health and immune function of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The aim of this study is to assess nutritional status and its associated factors in adult HIV/AIDS patients receiving HAART in the BHD.
A purposive cross-sectional facility-based sampling technique was used to select the participants with the total sample size of 151 participants from May2022- June 2022. A structured questionnaire was used and anthropometric measurements were taken to collect data. Z scores were determined using World Health Organization Anthro Plus. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with malnutrition. The statistical significance was declared at p value <0.05 with 95% confidence intervals in the final model.
The study found that 51% of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) were malnourished, 19.2% of the participants were underweight, 16.7% participants were overweight, and 15.3% were obese. The factors significantly associated with underweight were educational level and household size. No education (People living with household sizes (7-9) were 6 times more likely to be underweighted compared to people with household size (1-3) the odds of being overweight was about 3 times more for income earners spending between 1010000-200,000 than those spending <3000CFA on food
The rate of being overweight/obese was higher for women and the rate of being underweight was higher for men. Low dietary diversity and household food insecurity were common among people living with HIV/AIDS and receiving HAART in the Buea Health District. As such, intervention programs to improve dietary diversity and food insecurity are required to support the nutritional status of PLWHA in the BHD.
