THE INFLUENCE OF ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOURS ON ADOLESCENTS’ ACADEMIC PARTICIPATION
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to look at the impact of anti-social behavior on teenagers’ academic engagement in several chosen secondary schools in the Buea Municipality. The study specifically attempted to determine the impact of sexual behaviors, alcohol use, cigarette smoking, and drug usage on teenagers’ academic involvement. To steer the investigation, four research questions and four hypotheses were developed. The conceptual, theoretical, and empirical evaluations all included a review of related literature.
The study used a convergent mixed parallel design, with 312 teenagers taken from six different secondary schools in the Buea Municipality. A questionnaire and an interview guide prepared for students were used to collect data. The instruments’ validity and reliability were also established.
The questionnaire data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. At the P0.05 level of significance, the Pearson product moment correlation was utilized to test the hypothesis. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0 was used for this. Thematic analysis will be used to analyze qualitative data from interviews, which will include themes, groundings, and sample answers.
The data demonstrated a considerable relationship between teenagers’ sexual behaviors and their academic involvement. It was also shown that there was a high association between teenage academic participation and alcohol usage.
More so, a strong, positive correlation was revealed between cigarette smoking and adolescents academic participation. In addition, findings revealed that there was a strong correlation between drug abuse and adolescents’ academic participation. Thus anti-social behaviours has a significant influence on adolescents academic participation.
Adolescent involvement in anti-social behaviors such as sex, drinking, cigarette smoking, and drug misuse effects their academic participation. It was consequently advised that sex education be implemented in schools prior to puberty in order to ensure that teenagers successfully transition from adolescence to adulthood.
Campaigns against cigarette, drug, and substance use should also be included in college health education curricula, with a specific emphasis on the negative repercussions of the substances used, as well as the construction of drug-control counseling centers.
