AN INTERNSHIP REPORT CARRIED OUT AT THE BUEA REGIONAL TREASURY
Executive Summary
The internship was carried out .at the Buea Regional Treasury. This Internship is a short term program with primary focus of getting some job training in order to theory with what is practiced in the real world as well as identifying the problems faced in the real world and to suggest workable solutions to improve on performance.
Chapter two is the organizational background .The ordinance creating the Buea Regional Treasury which now act as the slate bank was given in 1962 and from then it has grown to has seven services namely; Expenditure service, Audit Brigade, Council service, value Deposit and Consignment service, SCTIC, cash and accounts service and managements service .Had the definition of some key positions.
Chapter three talks about the various services at the treasury their functions and the activities the intern carried out where she focused on the SCTIC service.
Chapter four talked about the evaluation of the internship by the intern stating the weakness and strengths, the positive and negative experiences of the various services encountered at Buea Regional Treasury, opportunities and finally chapter five which talks of the recommendations by the intern at each service in the treasury which could help solve some of their problems each service faced and lastly the conclusions.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Internship
University of Toronto defines internship to be a short term experience which can build skills in a specific field or career area. They also put it that, internship is an intentional learning agenda while job seeks remunerations.
Internship is an opportunity to integrate career related experience into an undergraduate education by participation in a planned and organized work.
Also internship helps provide students with experience and relevant skills to get into a particular field (career).
Internship is a short term program with primary focus of getting some job training in order to be able to match up lectures (theory) with what is practiced in the real world. Interns usually have supervisors who give them tasks to carry out and evaluate their overall work.
This internship is done by the student of UB on an annual basis. That is, it is done yearly. UB sends out students on internship unlike other schools for them to gain more practical skills.
1.2 Characteristics of Internship
- It provides substantive and challenging work experience.
- According to the University of St Thomas, it entails supervisors being assigned to students which is mentoring and educational.
- Opportunity to observe professionals in action: participate in staff meetings, client meetings, attend presentations and/or conference workshops and with professionals in the department (from university of St Thomas).
- It is usually a short period of time in which students gain personal and professional development through challenging work assignments and tasks.
1.3 Benefits of Internship
- Students get practical work experience and can bring great ideas in the changing job market.
- Students become more matured and confident of their skills and capabilities.
- Helps students to be able to acquire job search skills by interacting with workers who can give them great ideas.
- Students gain professional networking contacts which can enable them get jobs after graduation especially if the student was well behaved and competent.
1.4 Historical Background of the Treasury
The regional treasury Buea acts as state bank. This is one of the institutions under the ministry of finance. These institutions are Treasury, Taxation, Custom and Revenue. The treasury is in charge of handling financial matters. The generation of internal and external funds for business, the keeping and selling of state values.
Organization of the Cameroon Treasury Corps
The ordinance creating the regional treasury in Buea was given in 1962 and from them it has grown to have seven services. Under the
The missions and the organization of the present General Directorate of Treasury financial and Monetary Cooperation (GDTFMC) are the fruits of the adaptation and evolution of both legislative and regulatory reforms.
Since the independence of Cameroon in 1960 the public treasury in general and the GDTFMC in particular have witnessed an exponential increase in their missions and a consequent augmentation of their service with the need of a commensurate provision of human resources arid their reinforcement in capacity both in quality and quantity.
The missions and organization of the present GDTFMC are regulated by the following texts;
Ordinance No 62/of 4 of 7th February 1962 organizing the model of presenting the execution conditions of the Cameroon federal budget her revenue and expenditure of all paraphernalia budgetary operations.
The law No 2007/OO6of 26th December 2007 reorganizing the financial regime of the state.
Decree No 2003/165 of 30’1’ June 2003 organizing the functions of the ministry of finance and the budget.
Decree No 2005/119 of 15th August 2005 organizing the ministry of Economy and finance.
Decree No 2008/365 organizing the ministry of finance.
