CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this Editorial policy is to assist Hi Tv promote content which fulfill its functions under the National Broadcasting Codes and Codes. The Editorial Policies are intended to be applied with due regard for the nature of the content under consideration in particular cases.
Hi Tv is conscious that its dual obligations for accountability and for high quality can in practice interact in complex ways. It can be a sign of strength not weakness that journalism engages or art shocks. The Standards are to be applied in ways that maintain independence and integrity, preserve trust and do not unduly constrain journalistic enquiry or artistic expression. However, all who are involved with content for Hi Tv, are required to act with integrity and take account of likely harms in exercising their power and responsibility.
Scope:
The Hi Tv Editorial Policies applies to all content produced, commissioned, acquired or otherwise obtained for broadcast or publication.
Hi Television is Cameroon’s pioneer full-time English-Speaking TV station. Founded in 2009, the television station had as goal, to bridge the gap between the French dominated media space in Cameroon, and the English audience. Since 2009, the TV station, has branded itself as the leading media house with rich and authoritative English content. It has diversified its content production from News, Information, Entertainment, and Event Management. The TV station in 2015/2016, broadened its scope of coverage, with the extension of its broadcast audience, to global through the planting of the media house on satellite. Hence, the TV house is not only viewed across the territorial boundaries of Cameroon, it’s also being watched across the globe. The feedback, and interactions have been positive ever since Hi Tv went to satellite.
Hi Tv is being watched across all the six divisions of the Southwest Region, seven divisions of the Northwest Region, 10 regions of Cameroon, and by extension, across the world. Hi Tv is a community-based television. Using the inverted pyramidal, the TV station produces 10% local content, 15% National, and 5% global. The contents are produced in English, broken English (pidgin), and in some dominated Languages in the Southwest and
Northwest Regions. Over the years, the works of Hi Tv, have been recognised locally and Nationally, through the nomination and rewarding of the TV house, its programmes, and its journalists.
Vision:
“HiTV, Cameroon’s best digital infotainment English Channel, stands for a great society centred on a progressive culture, driven by professionalism, teamwork and integrity.”What does this mean? We offer infotainment content: information (news, debates, documentaries) and entertainment (shows, serials, music, devotion),in English for Cameroon’s Anglophone community both within and outside the country. In this niche, we aim at being the best.This digital-offer reaches the audience through different channels: satellite TV and internet. The TV format reaches our viewers by satellite and through cable distribution networks that distribute the satellite signal. On the internet HiTV is present on its website, and on Social Media (Twitter, Facebook and YouTube).
Mission:
HiTV seeks to contribute to the building of a sustainable society using flagship debate platforms on issues that touch the socioeconomic, and political nerves of the community. HiTv also broadcast contents with educational and cultural value. Our output and our way of working should be characterised by a progressive culture that builds the future on our cultural heritage and identity. We do not see culture as static but as progressive. With our work we contribute to forming Cameroon’s culture.
Hitv prides itself with three main values, professionalism, teamwork and integrity.
- Professionalism:
Professionalism means that we apply our skills and talents to the best of our knowledge in the execution of our job as media practitioners. To promote the most professional behaviours, HiTv staff are encouraged to undertake a number of refresher courses, and further studies.
- Teamwork:
On HiTv, we believe in working hand-in-hand. We believe that in the team, every player matter; so, we count on every team member for success. Basically, we help each other to improve on ourselves in a respectful atmosphere. To be the best, we must work together and not against each other.
- Integrity:
At HiTv, the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles, is our definition of one with integrity. We strive to be whole and undivided in the production of our contents and broadcasts. Every staff at HiTv shall:
– Keep your word. If you want to establish a solid reputation you must
deliver on your promises.
– Keep your commitments.
– Pay attention to your environment.
– Stay focused.
– Surround yourself with honest people.
– Take responsibility.
– Respect your employees.
Besides our in-house values, HiTv is also guarded by the standard values of objective journalism. Every staff of HiTv shall ensure that the gathering and presentation of news and information is impartial according to the recognised
journalism standards. In that regard, the following binding principles should be upheld at all times and in all circumstance;
– Not allowing our personal views or opinions to form a part of
our coverage
– Making sure views and facts are not misrepresented
– Making sure all significant opinion is duly reflected on any controversial issues
– Making sure any personal interest of a reporter or presenter is made clear to viewers
– they must not use their position to express their own views
– Members of staff have a duty to disclose to senior management any personal interest which may potentially jeopardize their duty to report with due impartiality
– Making sure particular views and opinions are not given undue prominence over others.
