EFFECT OF ADVERTISING ON THE PROFITABILITY OF OF SWECOM PLC
ABSTRACT
This report captures a two-month internship conducted at SWECOM PLC from the 3rd of August to the 30th of September 2020. As a marketing student, the intern had the main objective to blend classroom theoretical knowledge with the realities of managers in the field.
Despite the main objective, the intern had some specific objective to determine the extent to which advertising affect the profitability of a company, to evaluate the effect of the advertising on the profit of Swecom Plc and to analyze the impact of advertising on customer satisfaction.
This was specifically oriented towards the effect of advertising on the profitability of a company, during the two-month stay in SWECOM PLC, the intern was opportune to file documents alphabetically and make modifications to client’s bills, send messages and receive calls from clients, recording a few analyses of sale agents.
Through interviews, observations and company archives, the intern identified certain challenges faced by the organization such as Inadequate skilful cashiers and the intern recommend the company employ efficient and skilled workers to do the task, certain utilities like chairs and poor methods of preserving customer’s files.
Based on this, the intern suggested that the organization should buy more chairs so that it can ease the standing of visitors, clients and interns in the organization. The organization should also introduce an archive in which the files can be kept which will ease the preservation of clients’ documents.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Presentation of the company
Southwest communication (SWECOM) plc is a telecommunication service line market that is made up of two main services, wire line and wireless. The wireless telecom segment includes mobile voice services and mobile brand access while wire line services include among others, the fixed voice telephone and the fixed broad band access services and it started as a cable distributor in Fako in 1998.
It later extended its distribution to some other regions in 2005. In 2008 SWECOM established an Information Technology department (IT) and became an internet service provider (ISP) in Douala and in 2011 it extended to other regions.
Finally, in 2014 it include video on demand (VOD) and the IT solution, SWECOM offers services on the high definition digital cable television, video on demand, broadband internet connection and interconnection. SWECOM plc has significantly expanded its offer from cable television and has specialized in the Triple play services which is HDTV+VOD+broad brand internet through a technological point medium fibre, optics fiber to the home(FTTH) having a latest-generation broad brand cables network.
SWECOM plc Commercialize services targeting two district categories of clients, companies and individuals or homes. Its solid experience in the field of ICT ensures the satisfaction of each and every one. Swecom always is manage by the Board of Director (BOD) elected from its members and a company size of 51 to 200 employees.
The head office of Swecom is at Bonamoussadi Douala, around fin goudron Bangue
SWECOM PLC services coverage area in Cameroon are Kumba, Limbe, Tiko, Kribi, Douala, Yaoundé, Edea, Buea and Bamenda.Everybody is qualified to join SWECOM plc, provided he or she fulfills the conditions for membership.
Objectives of the organization
The main objective of SWECOM PLC is to be a leader in the primary tele -Communication Company in Cameroon and in 2025 all homes and corporate bodies should have their services running.
SWECOM PLC is organized in a hierarchical manner, from top to bottom beginning with the Board of Directors right down to the Guard (see appendix).
The management of SWECOM plc is under the control of the Board of Directors, while the day to day activities are carried out by the executive staff.
The General Assembly
The general assembly involves all the major shareholders and the board members. They have the supreme say with respects to decision taken to affect the organization. The General Assembly therefore stands as the supreme organ of the entity. It takes decisions on long term issues about the institution. Decisions are reached by a majority of votes, with each person at the assembly being entitled to one vote. General Assembly meets after every year but may also meets for an extra ordinary meeting if need be. The General Assemble is summoned by the chairman of the board who fixes the dates for the meeting.
Board of Directors
The board of director is made up of members elected by the general assembly. It directs the activities of the staff and the workers in each domain who offered services.
As concern sales, the board of director is in charge of providing direction for the organization, supervise, retrain, evaluate, and compensate the manager. The BOD governs the organization and the relationship with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and established a personnel policy manual which shows all what staff does in the entity.
The BOD ensures the company prosperity by collectively directing the company affairs, while meeting it appropriate interest of its shareholders and relevant stakeholders.
Assistant General Manager
The assistant manager is the second in command after the manager, she help the General Manager to ensure the day to day business operations run smoothly.
She execute task being given to her by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and also she act as a secretary who draw up weekly schedules, order merchandise and assist the general manager with control of stocks, sale, accounting, recovery, legal issues, public issues, and execution of letters in the organization, planning daily company operations to ensure positive, safe and profitable working environment.She does the same task as the manager when he is not around.
Human resource personnel
The human resource personnel is responsible for recruiting, interviewing and placing workers in the organization, he also handle employees relations, payroll, benefits and training. Human resource managers plan, direct and coordinate all the staff in their various branches.
The human resource manager is in charge of given suspension letters to staff, accepting internship letters, job offer letter, permission letter and right down all the activities and programs needed in the organization. He monitors staff performance and attendance. Make sure that staff gets paid correctly and on time.
The Technical Director
The technical director is the head of the technical department, in which the technical department is the mother base of SWECOM PLC, this department is in charge of controlling and the installation of television channels stations, cable line distribution to its customer as well as involved in internet distribution.
The technical department makes sure customers are satisfied by taking care of any technical fault that arises. It equally make sure that customers enjoy the best quality images and channels in which the cable line are clear without any interruption.
The technical director primarily work the sound, lighting and visual production process and his daily responsibilities is overseeing the audio and visual production process. He also makes sure that technical equipment in the theatre are functional, maintained and safe. The technical department is in charge for the overall organization of the technical production process.
The Branch manager
The branch manager is an executive who oversees the branch of each geographical location, he control and coordinate all the work being done by the staff. The branch manager maintains, manage and monitor all customers’ related operational issues. Develop and execute branch sales strategy to maximize revenue. Thereby preparing financial statement and analysis for branches. He Manages and supervises employees from different department.
Account Clerk
The account clerk perform accounting and clerical functions to support supervisors, issue checks for accounts payable, research, track and resolve accounting problems, record business transactions and key daily worksheet to the system .
In the Accounting departments, they have sub heads which include the chief accountant, billing manager, finance manager, accountant and the follow- up stock manager.
Chief Accountant
The chief accountant controls and coordinates all the work being done by the sub heads in the accounting department and make correction if any and they present a report to him before and after work.
Billing manager
The billing manager is simply the person who produces the bill of each client, he uses a system to installed in each geographical location so that he can have access to clients’ information immediately in which they can produce their monthly bill and the consumption of what they have consumed depending on the services they are using .
The billing manager receive the information by different salesmen or sale agents of each geographical location and then produces the bills to distribute to the various locations for their respective clients.
Finance Manager
The finance manager controls all amount of money received by the cashier and what is given out to sale agents and other staff and also what he deposits in the bank.
The finance manager has record of all transactions being made by the various cashiers of different geographical location to the bank so as to keep an update about the money deposited and received from the bank.
Accountant
The accountant is responsible for collecting cash from the vault (a room for storage or safekeeping) at the start of each day and keeping the balance of cash at the end of each day’s transaction. He also controlled cash with the cashier and assets which belongs to the company and also does the control of payroll.
The accountant recognizes every issues that has to do with cash in, he performed financial functions relating to the accuracy, analysis and presentation of the business, then holds a number of administrative functions, Statutory audit and taxation in the company.
Follow up stocks Accountant
The follow up manager plays a vital role in calculating the value of the company’s inventory, and their inventories are being done once a month but in the levels of branches every day, he also deal with two stocks, the physical stocks (what you can see) and the theoretical stock (what you have in the system) to check if they are up to date. Basically his function is to monitor the net worth of goods and maintain accurate records at all times.
He provides financial information to management by researching and analyzing accounting data, preparing report, forecasting supply and demand to prevent overstocking and running out of stock, submitting purchase details (vendor’s information invoices and pricing) to internal database.
The follow up manager deals with purchases, he evaluate using the evaluation form and check the material to see if it is correct for use and if it correspond with the one in the system.
With purchases, there are two accounts which are the Suppliers account, which deals with verification every day (make sure it should be settled) and the Bisco account (bisco is a store in Akwa where swecom plc buy its materials from) they buy materials from Bisco and sell to other branches and finally the settle the bills so that it should be zero.
Basically the follow up manager is in charge to choose the proper items to use in the company.
