Executive Summary

The internship was carried out at AD TRANSIT SARL. An internship is a programme organized to give students the opportunity to blend theories with practice under the supervision of the practitioners. This internship is also to help identify the problems faced in the real-world life enterprises and suggest workable solutions to improve on performance.

As well as to fulfill the requirement for the award of the Bachelor degree in transport and logistics). This work is divided into five chapters. Chapter one looks at the general introduction, aims and objectives of the internship, chapter two brings out the historical background of the organization, organizational structure, its aims and objectives.

Chapter three talks of the activities carried out by the intern in each department which brought about the interns focus area custom clearance procedures. Chapter four evaluates the strength and weaknesses of the organization and chapter five proposes some recommendations to AD TRANSIT SARL.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

 1.1 Background to internship

An internship program is meant to assess the intern ability in applying the theoretical knowledge learnt in a classroom in a practical situation in their respective fields. An internship is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest.

An internship could also be seen as a period of work experience offered by an employer to give students the ability to practice what they have studied in a given field of work.

An internship provides real world experience for those looking to explore or gain the relevant knowledge and skills required to enter into a particular carrier field. It is mainly taking what is learnt in classroom and apply in real world.

An internship is therefore a great opportunity to speak and work with experienced people who have been in the job market for so long so as to boost up your knowledge in the job and working environment on which u aspire to do in future and to equally have a wider understanding for future progress.

An internship is a great opportunity for students and graduates looking to gain relevant skills and experience in a particular field. Employers benefit from this placement because they often recruit employees from their best interns who have the expected capabilities to work.

Internships are supervised, structured learning experience in a professional setting that allows you to gain valuable work experience in a student’s chosen field of study. Internship offers you the chance to test your skills in real life situations, explore your career options and gain an insight into organization or career path.

Internship has equally been defined by several authors. Internship according to MCMAHON and QUINN in 1995 can be defined as a supervised work experienced whereby a student is under special attention during the internship instead of working alone in the industry.

According to CALLOWAY and BECKSTEAD in 1995, the internship experience exposes students to practical skills, improve their social relationships, motivate future learning and enhances their social personality. Additionally, these students will also have the opportunity to discover their job interest and objectives under a professional mentor.

PAUZE, JOHNSON and MILLER in 1989 viewed internship to be similar to a fieldwork, experiential learning. It is an experiential learning that gives students opportunity to integrate and consolidate thinking and actions. ROTHMAN in 2007 explained that internships are an essential part of recruitment success for many companies where a specific department often manages their internship program with the educational institution.

This will ensure that internships are meaningful experience which develop the human capital and will result with better learning experience for the interns.  ABDUL KARIM and CHONG in 2012 define it as a chance for students to incorporate they’re on the job work experience and knowledge into their university education by being supervised and planned real world professional work environment.

CHEN, HU and WANG in 2011 defined internship as an experience that expose students to practical skills, improve their social relationships, motivate future learning and enhances their social personality. Additionally, these students will also have the opportunity to discover their job interest and objectives under a professional mentor.

1.2 Aim and objectives of internship

To see what the working setting looks like and if it’s a place you can picture spending your career doing. If you are going to have your internship at a custom organization, you should be able to determine that what you’re doing matches with what you aspire to be in future.

It also helps you make useful connections. The person or people who manage you during your internship may become mentors, who can provide helpful information and who can help guide you during your career. You can use them as references for future jobs because they have seen you in action and they know your competencies.

1.3 Operational Definition of Term

Reverse logistics: It is the process of moving goods from the typical final destination(customers) to producers with the main purpose of recapturing remanufacturing and refurbishing in order to add value, or proper disposal(ongombe,2012).

Product recycling: it is the process of recovering materials from waste and turning it in to new product in which the original product is been destroyed

Remanufacturing : it is an industrial process whereby used products or breakdown components normally described as cores are restored to useful life through a sequence of processes

Product return : it is a process through which a customer taking previously purchased merchandise back to the retailer, and in return receiving a refund in the original form of payment, exchange for another item or a store credit.

Container terminal: It is a transport terminal that handles containerized cargo

Custom house: It is a place where custom duties are paid and goods entered are cleared.

Groupage: It is a process of combing cargo from different area or person in other to fill up a container ready for shipment.

Demorage: It is money paid by the carrier to the shipper when laydays have been exceeded.

Free trade zone: It is a geographical area where goods maybe imported, stored, handled, manufactured and re-exported under specific custom regulation and generally not subjected to custom duties.

Photosanitary: Deals with the quality of goods carried out by SGS and ANOR

Custom agent: A custom agent is a law enforcement office working on behalf of the government to carry out inspections on goods and people moving in and out of the country.

Transit: It is the importation of goods destined for other countries.  It is a custom regime that permits the transportation of goods in suspension of taxes and duties following a determined passage respecting the duration of movement given, it also goes in suspending all economics measures and prohibitions from one point to another covered by cautions. It is that regime that allows custom formalities to take place at the point of destination rather than the point of entry into a custom territory.

Freight forwarder: A freight forwarder is an individual or a third-party agent often without shipping and transporting assets operating on your behalf to arrange with others the carriage of your freight.

Custom duty: It refers to the tax imposed on goods when they are transported across international borders.

Consignor: In a contract of carriage, it is the person sending a shipment to be delivered either by land, air, and sea. He is considered as the former owner of the consignment goods who makes a transfer ownership of a consignment to another upon payment.

Consignee: It is an individual to whom the goods transported is to be delivered to. He is considered to be the real owner of the consignment who fulfills customs formalities at the port of destination upon the payment of duties and taxes and obtaining the custom declaration.

One Stop Shop: It is a place where many services are being offered. It was created to ease the clearance process of imported goods in Cameroon.

Manifest: It is a shipping document used by the customs personnel reviewing a particular transport vehicle intended trip that summarizes all bill of lading that have been used by the carrier.

2.1 Historical Background of the Organization

History of AD TRANSIT

AD TRANSIT SARL was created in 2013 and founded by Mr Munde Valentine, it is a limited liability company having its head of manager and approved custom broker. It is located in Ancient PMUC located in Akwa Douala. In the content of professional sectors, AD TRANSIT SARL developed many ways in which it could perform a good job and meet with the needs of its customers.

AD TRANSIT SARL carries out several activities such as Customs, Transit, Import, Transport, Trading. These activities have helped to push the company forward. In terms of human resource, the company cannot function without a minimum number of employees of about 9 to perform various activities. Its material resource includes computers and different freight cars. It has asset of goals to achieve in other to improve the quality of its service.
