CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of internship
There are several reasons for undertaking and internship which include the following;
One of the reasons for the internship is because it is a partial fulfillment of to graduate: In order to be an eligible student to graduate, an internship is one of the course programs a student must take. This makes internship or vocational training inevitable.
Also, to prepare me for the business world: as a final year student, I will soon be entering the business world and job market. This there for is a gate way to prepare me for the job market.
Again, it builds the courage to face t6he the job market; market: Most at times the thought of the job market scare students as they meet a new environment, new2 faces and new task like working in the midst of colleagues and seniors, talk in public and in seminars. This is because of the timidity and shyness, the internship gives them the needed courage to cross this barrier.
Internship further gives the students the chance to compare school and work life, theory to practical.
I get to understand the difference of being a worker and a student, understand that theory is different from practical (for instance in school we are taught 5cs are used to grant credit that is collateral, capital, capacity, condition, and character with collateral being most important, but in the business world the borrowers past records are also very important and capacity to repay the loan is most important).
Also, internship makes it easier to master the concepts in school: notes are at times too complex and cumbersome to read, understand and retain (most especially for slow learners) but one quickly understands and masters’ practical since you carry it out. This serves as a cado to master the concepts in school.
Furthermore, it is to make students get advice and directions on how to approach the job market: working alongside workers (company staffs and managers) will enable students to get advice and directions from them. Since they are in the field already, they will guide me on how to get there, what it takes to get to various positions (quality of results) and how to present myself for future interviews.
Lastly, to enable students to get good connections: creating good friendship ties with the organization’s staff and keeping a good conduct is a good opportunity for good connections in the nearest future and a possible job for the student.
Definition of internship: and internship is an opportunity offered by an employer to potential employees called interns, to work in his organization for a partial period of time usually between one to three months. Interns are usually undergraduates or students. This internship prepares them for the job market, clears their doubts about the business world and gives them then needed experience, courage and skills to take to the job market and prepare them for their eventual career.
1.2 Objectives of the internship:
The following are things I want to achieve from the internship:
- To learn and understand the business world, how it operates.
- Fully understand the concepts thought in school.
- Understand the different task to be done in an organization.
- Get possible advice and guide from workers and superiors.
- To create good connections for a possible job in future.
- Gaining some experience and adding wait to my `CV’ in future
2.1 HISTORY OF THE BUEA P&T CREDIT UNION LIMITED. (BPTCCUL)
P&TCCUL STANDS FOR POST AND TELECOMMUNCATION. This organization started in 1969 and was created by some telecommunication technicians of the automatic telephone exchange in Buea who felt the need to put their money away for rainy days.
They did not know how to operate a real banking system so they invented saving techniques by creating a `njangi’ group, which did not prove to be very efficient. The idea was transforming a njangi group into a more efficient and reliable financial house-the credit union.
The idea was nurtured and hatched in 1971 when the njangi group was given and authorization to effectively launch its operational activities as a credit union and was christened the Buea P&T Credit union, under the COBA CK registration law number -2001/05.00395/MINEFI and was given the name as the `Buea P&T Cooperative Credit Union, as the new monetary union gathered steam, there was the ne3ed to elect new pioneer executive.
By 1975 like little drops of rain which make up the mighty ocean, it rose to about 14million fcfa solely managed by telecommunication technicians. So taking a post of responsibility as a board member was very necessary and election to any post were organized during an annual general assembly.
As the business grew the members saw a need to hire people who will manage their money, so they took a treasurer, then a manager expert in the field. They started voting their directors whose account saving were at least 2million.
The directors are people who appoint the managers, the cashier, the treasurers according to the character and integrity of the appointee and who are experts in the field of accountancy banking, they also appoint experts to assess the business financially in auditing according to OHADA and CamCCUL regulations.
When the board of directors saw that BPTCCUL was gaining more grants, popularity and costumers, they opened new branches in MOLYKO, EDENAU,MUYENGUE AND recently YAOUNDE.
