ONE-MONTH INTERNSHIP CARRIED OUT AT MUTUAL ASSISTANCE FOR STUDENTS AND SMALL BUSINESS ENTERPRISE (MASS INT’L)
Executive Summary
The one month internship placement from 1st August to 31st August 2016 at Mutual Assistance for Students and Small Business Enterprises (MASS INTERNATIONAL).
This internship was carried out mainly to compare between theory knowledge and practical knowledge and also to fulfill the partial requirement for the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) certificate.
The main objective of the organization is to contribute to the alleviation of poverty in line with the UN millennium goals through the promotion of entrepreneurship and employment.
During this placement, I carried out the following activities; updating the daily journal and the cashier checklist, depositing loans with the cashier, acting as a receptionist that is receiving customers and new members into the organization.
The main strength of this organization is their level of spiritual commitment to God and the main weakness is the lack of insurance policy which can indemnify them in case of lost occurring.
To compare between theory and practice, it was seen, observed that the five forces which Porter pointed out can affect the environment of MASS Int’l and as such, they should be handled with care if they must perform well or want to survive and exist.
The organization should increase the size of their office and also the number of computers.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Internship
The internship is a period of industrial training, placement or attachment in an organization, during which students are given the opportunity and chance to blend theory and practice and to acquire professional skills in their different field of study. A professional may be defined as an occupation that requires specialized knowledge and intensive academic preparations.
This report is based on one month internship carried out at Mutual Assistance for students and small businesses international (MASS IN’L) situated at Sosoliso Molyko Buea, from the 1st to the 31stt of August 2016.
The main activity of MASS INT’L is to provide financial assistance to members with little interest, create accounts for students and small business, and also do the daily saving through “ACHAO”
1.2 Aims and Objectives of the Study
- To fulfill the partial requirement for the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND),
- To develop and acquire skills on job delivery,
- To me acquire good habits and know ethics of professional career,
- To test interest in a particular field of studies or career before permanent commitments are made,
- To prove opportunity for the intern to earn salary while pursuing educational goals,
- To develop employment record and references that will enhance employability after studies.
1.3 Operational Definitions
Common initiative group (CIG): it is a group of people who comes together to achieve a common goal. E.g Njongi houses.
Procurement: it is the process of acquiring or buying equipment or any other assets for a company.
SWOT: this means strength, weakness opportunity and threat. It is a term used by the project coordination after each finding in the field.
Cash Receipts: it is given to customers that pay or save money in the account or those that come and reimburse back a loan.
Payment vouchers: this is s document showing that money has been given out and the person receiving has to endorse the cheque with the name, ID Card Number, date of issue, phone number, and signature.
Mobile Cash Collection: it is daily collection that is done in the organization popularly called “ACAOH” whereby collectors move from one business place to another on daily basis to enable members save money. This money can be collected either within the or after the month depending on the desire of the member.
Savings: it is the act of keeping money for future use which this would end a reward known as interest and this is very controversial issue.
