PEER TEACHING AND ITS INFLUENCE ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS WITHIN THE BUEA MUNICIPALITY
Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to find out if peer teaching affects students’ academic performance. The research was a survey, which sought to know students’ opinions on peer teaching and its influence on students’ academic performance. Three research questions guided the study:
Does peer teaching focus on remedial teaching? is the atmosphere in peer teaching is supportive? and do students perform better in their areas of difficulty after peer teaching? A total of 90 questionnaires were distributed, answered, and returned to the researcher.
Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and means, frequencies, and tables. From this study it was found out that the majority of students agreed that peer teaching focuses on remedial teaching, the atmosphere in peer teaching is more supportive, and students perform better in their areas of difficulty after peer teaching.
Based on the outcome of this study it was recommended that the family and the school should instill a positive peer grouping attitude in the students in order to improve their overall academic performance.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
Society is a living image of the products of education. Schools socialize people to fit in the society in the sphere of economics, cultural, political, social, and above all moral well-being.
In recent years, peer teaching has become more prevalent in secondary schools. According to Freddie Silver, (2012), while many of these peer tutoring programs are extremely successful, some are not. For many students, working with a peer teacher in a particular subject area can make the difference between success and failure.
Peer teachers often have strength in a subject area and work with students who are having some difficulty or need support. Close examination of the advantages and disadvantages will lead to better planning and improve students’ academic performance.
Peer teaching has scheduling difficulties that are scheduling may disturb other students. The teaching programs need to consider where and when they can take place; both those teaching and the student can miss new classwork while the teaching takes place. Also, a peer teacher needs to be followed up by a staff member. It may be costly for a school to recruit staff volunteers for this position. This greatly affects the students’ academic performance.
Although professional teaching is very valuable and may work best for some students in some subject areas, peer teaching also has great advantages. According to Goodlad, and Hirst, (1989) the student receives individual attention and support for his academic needs, the act of teaching enhances students’ own learning, it enriches the learning environment.
Looking at this situation in which most schools find themselves, the researcher opted to find out the influence of peer teaching on students’ academic performance.
Statement of the Problem
Even though peer teaching may have its challenges because the student is not a professional teacher, many students have been known to perform well as a result of peer teaching. It is inexpensive and can make up for missed classwork. It is beneficial to introverts or those who find the teacher unapproachable. This study aims at finding out if peer teaching has any effect on students’ academic performance.
