CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
This research focuses on attitudes of physical impaired persons towards contemporary prophets in Buea municipality this chapter is divided in into the following sub heading: back ground to the studies, statement of the problem, the purpose of the study, objective of the study, research, question, significance of the study, scope and delimitation of the study and operational definition of some key terms.
Background to the study
Physical disabilities can be an intriguing and yet a confusing field for conducting research. Confusion can arise from unclear definitions and the frequent presence of coexisting intellectual and developmental, sensory, communication, or cognitive disabilities. To begin, the term physical disability must be defined. For the purposes of this article, physical disability covers a broad sweep of areas.
Types may include congenital disabilities (e.g., cerebral palsy), acquired disabilities (e.g., spinal cord injury), and sensory/communication disabilities (e.g., low vision). Although co-occurring intellectual and developmental disability may be present, this article focuses solely on persons with a physical disability.
Similar to responses to the other disabilities, these individuals and their advocates increasingly focus on concerns to improve environmental accessibility and inclusion in their communities. Causes of physical disabilities include prenatal, natal, and postnatal.
Prenatal disabilities are acquired before birth and may occur because of an illness carried by the mother during pregnancy or by a genetic problem between the parents. Prenatal disabilities occur during birth and may be acquired because of a lack of oxygen or the obstruction of the respiratory tract, damage to the brain during birth, or premature birth.
Postnatal disabilities are acquired after birth and are caused by accidents, infection, or other illnesses. Several themes arise when considering the roles of social work and civil rights when supporting persons with physical disabilities.
The following addresses several vital issues, including conceptualization of new perspectives arising from the field of disability studies in which the traditional medical model is rejected in favor of inclusive and interconnected lives.
This shift from a medical model to a social model of disability touches on topics that include relevant employment issues and services that lead to increased community participation (e.g., supported employment); health issues- the projected increase of incidence, housing- community in which increasing use is made of approaches based on person-centeredness, peer support, consumers, the independent living movement, and person-first language, legislation and court decisions to support inclusive and community-based environments; maintenance of independence, types of physical disabilities that range from acquired to congenital; veterans issues and the built environment in which the person with a physical disability lives.
A Social History of Disability in the middle ages… CRC Press ). A person with a physical disability is constrained by his physical ability to perform an activity independently such as walking, bathing, toileting, etc.
A person can be physically disabled due to two reasons: Congenital/Hereditary – the person has physical disability since birth or the disability developed at a later stage due to genetic problems, problems with muscle cells or injury during birth. Acquired, – the person acquired the physical disability through road or industrial accidents, infections such as polio or diseases and disorders such as stroke or cancer (source- Wikipedia; History and Physical Disabilities published on December 6, 2006 read more posts by the author of History and Physical Disabilities, T Alexander).
There are two major categories under the Physical Disability Group, they are: Muscular Skeletal Disability and Muscular disability (muscular dystrophy). Physical disability is defined as the inability to carry out distinctive activities associated with movements of the body parts due to muscular or bony deformities, diseases or degeneration.
The disabilities grouped under Musculo skeletal disability are; Loss or deformity of limbs Osteogensis Imperfecta Muscular Dystrophy Neuro.
Muscular skeletal disability is the inability to carry out distinctive activities associated with movements of the body parts due to muscular or bony deformities, diseases or degeneration.
The disabilities grouped under Musculo skeletal disability are: Loss or Deformity of Limbs Osteogensis Imperfecta Muscular Dystrophy Neuro. Muscular dystrophy is the term used to define genetic muscle diseases that cause the muscles to suffer irreversible damage.
Muscular dystrophy can affect the eyes, mouth, heart and lungs (causing those suffering from it to experience difficulty swallowing and breathing) and some suffer from mental impairments. Muscle disability affects people of different ages for example Distal (affects people in ages between 40-60), Emery-Dreifuss (affects childhood to early teens).
Contemporary prophets are prophets of nowadays such as Apostle John chi, prophet Divine Okafor to name a few. The prophets of today differ from those of old in some aspects but the true prophets of old and today all heard and hear from directly from God the father (with the 3 persons of the God head being; the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and are all one and the same person).
Statement of the problem
Physically impaired persons attitude have negative, positive and neutral attitude towards contemporary prophets. These attitudes have contributed to the behavior of contemporary prophets. Some of them because of their negative attitude they do not believe the prophets can help them while those with positive attitudes towards prophets believe they can be helped by these prophets.
They are being compared with profits of old such as Jeremiah ,Ezekiel and even apostles of Jesus Christ such as Paul, peter just to name a few. They believe that the prophets of nowadays concentrate more on prosperity thereby enriching themselves instead of giving salvation messages to help improve them.
They think contemporary prophets are mostly not following the instruction of God or respect what the scripture says though there are real prophets there are also false prophets because the scripture says so in the Holy Bible of 1John4:1 the bible says “ beloved, belief not every spirit but try the spirits weather they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world ‘’.
This is to show that not all the prophets of nowadays are real or true prophets because of this it has caused some people like the physically impaired persons to have different attitudes some believe in the prophets and others do not while others are neutral about the prophets of nowadays. This research is intended to bring out the attitudes of the physically impaired persons attitude towards prophets of nowadays in the Buea municipality.
