PROGRESS TOWARD UNAIDS 95-95-95 HIV TARGETS IN LIMBE HEALTH DISTRICT: ASSESSMENT AND INFLUENCING FACTORS.
Abstract
Background: The Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is one of the world’s most fatal infectious diseases and considered a public health problem with massive impact on health outcomes especially across Sub-Saharan Africa. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS set new targets, the 95-95-95, expected to be attained by 2025. However, many countries including Cameroon are still lagging in the achievement of these targets.
Objective: This work aimed at assessing the progress made towards achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets and the associated factors, amongst the adults of the Limbe Health District.
Materials and methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study consisting of 300 participants and a review of records of 534 files carried out from February 2023 to May. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to sample the participants. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 27. Continuous variables were summarized using means and frequencies and percentages, for categorical variables. Binary logistic regression in the bivariate analysis was used to determine the association between independent and dependent variables and to screen for predictors for the multivariate analysis.
Results: The mean age of the participants was 38.2±14.0 years, 210 (70%) were females and 203 (67.7%) fell within the age group 21-40 for the cross-sectional study. The proportion of HIV cases who were aware of their status was 14 (58.3%, 95%CI:38.6-78.1) with 13 (92.9%, 95%CI:79.4-106.4) being on treatment and 340 (63.7%, 95%CI:59.6-67.8) virally suppressed. Sex, education and marital status were found to be associated with HIV screening in the multivariate analysis with 4.65 odds of females going for screening than males and 9.44 for married individuals over singles.
Religion was found associated with test results in the multiple regression analysis and good adherence to treatment was significantly associated with viral load suppression (p=0.015) with a proportion of 63.1% (337) reported for good adherence.
Conclusion: The Limbe Health District is still lagging in the three 95 targets, with an achievement level of 58-93-64. There is still a gap in early diagnosis and subsequent adherence to treatment.
