IMPACTS OF URBAN TRANSPORT ON THE SOCIAL SEGREGATION OF LOW-CLASS GROUPS IN DOUALA
Abstract
Bonaberi is a rapidly growing urban center that faces significant challenges related to urban transportation and social segregation. The town has inadequate transportation infrastructure, limited public transportation, and poor road conditions.
The researcher thought it wise to investigate the impact of urban transport on the social segregation of low -class groups in Bonaberi Douala Cameroom. This study measured urban transport, affordability and accessibility on social segregation in Bonaberi.
The study adopt both quantitative and qualitative research method and primary data was obtained from the field through observation and questionnaires were administered, personal interviews survey. Secondary data were obtainedfrom published and unpublished sources were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statiscal techniques.
A sample of 150 respondents were randomly selected in 5 quarters in Bonaberi to represent the target population. The data were analyzed using One sample t-test, crosstabulation and chi-square (X2). Using, the one sample test, the statistical results strongly support the notion that transport has an impact on the social segregation the low-class population in Bonaberi thus, so the research Hypothesis was accepted as majority of the respondents perceive this relationship, with the mean value significantly deviating from the hypothetical value of 1.
Also, the measures put in place by the government revealed that little has been done to mitigate transport exclusion of its residents which was confirmed by its residents as the effectiveness and sustainability of public transport, the accessibility and frequency of roads, the affordability of transport services, and the common problems faced by low-income households have not been addressed.
The study concludes that transport plays a crucial role in social exclusion among low-income groups in Bonaberi-Douala. The identified challenges and problems require immediate attention from authorities and relevant stakeholders to create a more inclusive and accessible transport system.
The recommendations provided in this study include enhancing availability and frequency of public transport, improving affordability, ensuring safety and security, strengthening integration and coordination of transport services, and investing in infrastructure and maintenance. These recommendations aim to address the specific needs and preferences of low-income populations and foster social integration.
