PRINCIPALS’ CONFLICT MANAGEMENT STYLES AND ITS INFLUENCE ON GOVERNMENT SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ EFFECTIVENESS
Abstract
This study was designed to investigate principals’ conflict management styles and its influence on government secondary schools’ effectiveness. Four objectives were used as follows: to find out the impact of accommodation management style, avoidance management style, compromise conflict management style and collaborative conflict management style influences school effectiveness.
The study adopted a survey research design. Data was collected using 30 questionnaires. The principals were selected using the purposive sampling technique. Descriptive analysis and inferential statistics were used with focus on frequency tables, percentages and graphs. Data gathered from the respondents were statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage counts) and the Chi Square test of association was used to test the hypothesis of the study.
The findings showed that there was a significant relationship between accommodation conflict management style by principals and secondary schools’ effectiveness X2 (1, N = 30) = 13, p = 0.000) hence we reject the null hypothesis. Findings indicated that there is a significant relationship between avoidance conflict management style by principals and secondary schools’ effectiveness X2 (1, N = 30) = 5.7, p = 0.017.
Hence, we rejected the null hypothesis and accepted the alternate hypothesis. Also, there was a significant relationship between compromise conflict management style by principals and secondary schools’ effectiveness X2 (1, N = 30) = 11.3, p = 0.001 as such the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternate hypothesis accepted.
Finally, there was a significant relationship between collaboration conflict management style by principals and secondary schools’ effectiveness X2 (1, N = 30) = 15, p = 0.000. As such we rejected the null hypothesis and accepted the alternate hypothesis. Based on the findings it was recommended that, the use of conflict management styles in managing conflict in secondary schools should be implemented for school effectiveness.
