ATTITUDES TOWARDS GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING SERVICE AND THE CAREER CHOICE OF ADOLESCENT STUDENTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN THE BUEA MUNICIPALITY
Abstract
The main objective of this study was to examine attitudes towards guidance and counseling services and career choice of adolescent students in some selected high schools in the Buea municipality. Specifically, the study sought to access student’s knowledge on GAC services, to examine student’s feelings towards GAC services, to evaluate student’s behavior towards GAC services. The study employed a descriptive research design. The population of the study included some high school students from 03 government schools in Buea (GHS Bokwoango, GHS Great Soppo, and GHS Bolifamba).
A questionnaire was used to measure attitude towards counseling services and the career choice of adolescent students in three selected schools in the Buea municipality and the questionnaire was administered to 205 students from the lower sixth and upper sixth. The data was then analyzed using descriptive statistical method, and inferential statistics was used to test the hypothesis specifically, the Pearson’ correlation coefficient.
Findings revealed that, students are aware of the presence of GAC services in their school with an overall mean of 2.35. they had positive feelings towards the GAC services and therefore tends to have positive behavior towards the services this can be seen from the mean of 2.75, they therefore agree to the fact that they go in for the services where need arises. Therefore, attitude of students towards guidance and counseling services are positive and therefore has an effect on their career choice.
This is because of the fact that a significant p-value of (p<0.05) was gotten after testing the relationship between their attitude and their career choice. So from these findings we can conclude with all certainty that student’s attitude towards guidance and counseling services affects their career choice.
Based on the findings, some recommendations were made to the counselors, students and parent, the study therefore suggest that Sensitization should be done in schools to create awareness to students on GAC services and on the role their attitude plays in maximizing the services and sensitization should also be done in communities to educate parents and guidance of these students so that they will be able to recommend their children to go seek for guidance and counseling services when they are in need of it and when they want to make career choices for themselves.
School counselors should make use of the positive feeling the students have towards guidance and counseling services so as to create a good relationship with them to create more impact in their lives when it come to their careers and in order aspects.
