IMPACT OF MARITAL CONFLICT BEHAVIOUR ON THE SOCIOEMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF ADOLESCENTS IN BUEA MUNICIPALITY
Abstract
The main objective of the study was to examine the impact of marital conflicts behaviour on the socio-emotional development of adolescents in Fako Division. This study was guided by three research objectives which were, to analyze how physical aggression between couples influences the socio-emotional development of adolescents, investigate how verbal aggression amongst couples influences the socio-emotional development of adolescents and investigate the extent to which neglect of spouse influences socio-emotional development of secondary adolescents.
The study sampled 167 secondary school adolescents (65 males and 102 females) using convergent parallel research design. Data was collected using a questionnaire and interview guide. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings showed that all the null hypothesis were rejected in favour of the alternative hypothesis. It was therefore concluded that marital conflicts behaviour significantly affects the socio-emotional development of adolescents in Buea Municipality.
Based on the findings, it was recommended that parents should seek for effective ways of conflict management like seeking counselling services, dialogue, getting a third party involved amongst others. Therefore, the researcher’s recommendation in this light is formulated in the form of an appeal to school administrators, school counsellors, teachers, students, parents based on objectives.
