SANITATION AS A DETERMINANT OF MALARIA PREVALENCE IN A TOPOGRAPHICAL TROPICAL ENVIRONMENT
Abstract
Malaria is a disease caused by protozoan parasite plasmodium. This is a common life-threatening disease in many Tropical and sub-tropical areas. It’s one of the most deadly disease estimated at 228 million cases worldwide and 405000 deaths in 2018 (WHO 2018), with the current climate change, malaria is no longer a disease of low lands especially swampy areas it has also become endemic in highland areas and presents a serious public health problem around the globe.
This is a huge problem in Buea urban which is a highland environment with low amount of temperature which is not suppose to have malaria prevalence but faces a lot of malaria cases. The main purpose of this study was to examine sanitation as a determinant of malaria prevalence in a topographical tropical environment.
The methodology was based on questionnaires which were administered using a purposive random sampling technique. Field work constituted a very large amount of primary source data. Primary data were gotten from field observation, interviews and the administration of questionnaires (200).
Maps were drawn in ARGIS using landsat images. Empirical tests were established for quantitative test of the hypotheses. The study went a long way to verify and confirm its main hypotheses which was that ‘’malaria is highly influenced by environmental factors. Results revealed that sanitation and environmental factors has an influence on malaria prevalence in Buea urban.
To help solve the problem of malaria, study recommends that the population of Buea municipalities should implement good environmental hygiene and sanitations strategies around their homes.
