DETERMINANTS OF OCCUPATIONAL INJURIES AMONGST BUILDING CONSTRUCTION WORKERS IN BUEA
Abstract
Occupational injuries are one of the most important crippling factors contributing to disabilities and life- threatening situations in the developed and developing countries. The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that there are over 270 million occupational accidents causing two million deaths annually. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the nature and magnitude of occupational injuries among building construction workers in Buea.
This was a community-based cross-sectional descriptive study conducted from February 2023 to May 2023 among building construction workers in construction sites in Buea. The study included construction sites selected through simple random sampling method and data was collected by using a well-structured and pretested questionnaire with a sample size of 340 participants. The data was entered and analyzed using Epi Info version 7 and SPSS version 20 statistical package respectively. Binary Logistic regression was used to find the association between the characteristics of the independent variables and the dependent variables p < 0.05 was considered significant throughout the study. Predictors of work related injury were identified using multivariate logistic regression.
Of the 353 participants, 313 (89.9%) respondents have had injury or accidents at work in the past. The most frequent causes of occupational injuries were fell from height 114(30.7%) followed by being hit by falling object, 97 (30.7%). Of the injuries sustained, 159 (50.3%) of them were open wounds as a result of being pierced by construction object. The main body parts that were injured were the hand and the foot. Workers in the age group of 18-24 were at increased risk of occupational injuries (P value < 0.05).
Occupational injuries among building construction workers are very common in the Buea Health District. This highlights the need for identifying appropriate interventions for occupational injury prevention and control measures for behavioral change to help curb the burden of injuries among building construction workers.
