Abstract

The sample size consisted of two hundred and twenty-nine (229) students from lower sixth and upper sixth selected using the Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sample size table. The tool used for data collection was a questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using chi-square.
The findings revealed that compliance has no effect on students’ adaptation in secondary schools in the Buea Municipality, acceptance has no effect on students’ adaptation in secondary schools in the Buea municipality, belonging has an effect on students’ adaptation in secondary schools in the Buea municipality, conformity does not affect students’ adaptation in secondary schools in the Buea municipality.
Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made; school counselors should play a prominent and leading role in the matter of peer group influence by organizing lectures, seminars, career talk and symposiums that can create positive awareness on influence of peer group compliance on academic performance of students; the government and ministry of education at all levels should ensure that trained counselors are posted in all schools and colleges so as to provide preventive counseling services and modify the behaviours of students who perchance have been negatively influenced by peers; Parents as primary caregivers should regularly counsel their children about the kind on peers they should interact with.
