PRACTICUM REPORT CARRIED OUT AT G.H.S BOKWANGO , BUEA
INTRODUCTION
Over the years, the administrators in the Faculty of Education have developed a practice which gives students an opportunity to in the field and have an opportunity to practice what they have been taught in class which involves mostly theoretical section of the work. The administrators try to bring out strategies that can help the students to practice the different theories they studied in class which the practicum exercise is also known as an Internship.
This internship also enables the students to gain administrative skills by working in collaboration with the administrators in the school environment and make us feel as important members in the society. Most importantly, practicum has made students from other towns of the country who studied in the University of Buea under the Faculty of Education use the practice as an opportunity to explore the town in which they are studying.
Definition Of Term.
TEACHER: A teacher is anyone who helps to facilitate the teaching and learning process, Luma (1983) . The teacher is someone who gives knowledge to students and bring about intended outcome in the classroom.
TEACHERS MOTIVATION. Teacher’s motivation involves both the desire to teach and one’s interpersonal style towards a task in order to enable them perform better.
CLASS PARTICIPATION: class participation can be defined as student’s work or efforts both inside and outside of school including hours spent on homework, meetings and classes. Ken (2006) describes class participation as when students are given the opportunities participate during the teaching and learning process thereby fostering their understanding.
STUDENT: A student is someone or a person enrolled in an educational institution such as a school. This is a person formally engaged in learning especially one enrolled in a school or college and participates in the educational activities, Ngalim (2003).
SCHOOL. A school is a formal institution where teaching and learning takes place and where formal education can be acquired. According to Ken , 2006 , a school is an educational institution designed to provide learning spaces and learning environment for the teaching of students under the direction of the teacher
What Is Practicum?
Merriam-Webster defined practicum as a course of study designed especially for the preparation of teachers and clinicians that involves the supervised practical applications of previous studied theory. It is learning by doing that is; transferring of knowledge of actual work. It is an observational activity that requires students to observe the teaching learning process and activities, attitudes, shown by teachers and students in the teaching learning environment.
On the other hand, teaching practicum can also be defined as the provision of the direct experience opportunities to the students of the Faculty Of Education to apply newly acquired skills and knowledge in a more real life situation.
This practice helps brings students face to face with concrete situations and their underlying assumptions are considered as a form of problem solving that students learn best within cohesive academic and practical situations that allow them to understand and master the environment.
Objectives Of Practicum
The objectives of this teaching practicum can be identified below;
Practicum helps us to examine the school climate. That is the relationships that exist in the school between administrators/teachers, teachers/teachers, teachers/students, and teachers/parents.
- To identify the different activities and behaviors done by students during lessons and after lessons.
- To observe how adolescences behave when they are faced with problems in the school environment.
- To become familiar with the various ways of managing a classroom and how to handle problems and discipline.
- Practicum helps us to identify children with special needs and acquire appropriate techniques of handling them.
- To verify if theories are directly related to what is on the field.
- To observe the various teaching methods, strategies, and techniques used by the teachers and administrative department in the school environment.
- To examine the extent to which children’s home background affects the teaching learning process.
Importance Of Practicum.
- This practice helps learners to choose the right choice of career by given them an opportunity to practice what they intend to do in future.
- Also, practicum helps the students to learn ways of building relationships for example engaging with new set of learners and administrators.
- In addition, experience gotten in the field practice can help students build confidence in their future career.
- Also as a guided practice it enable students to understand more on what they studied in the classroom.
- In conclusion, practicum also give students an opportunity to experience things they will face in the future and put them in preparation for it or to know their strength and weakness, and try to look for means to cope with them.
Historical Background Of Government High School Bokwango Buea.
Government High School Bokwaongo was created in 1987, with its motor as the CREDDLE OF EXCELLENT. Mr. NIBA YOUNG was the pioneer principal of the school, he had the privilege of laying the institution foundation stone at the permanent location.
In 1988, Mr. NGEDE GODLOVE NTANG took over as the administration new principal and his reign lasted from 1988 up till 1991 where he handed over the administration of the college to Me NJANG EMMANUEL MBENG. Mr. .EMMANUEL MBENG later on handed the administrative duties of the school to Madam MBUA HANNAH ETONDE in August 2002 to 2016 .MR TAMBE PATRICK EBOB took over from 2016 to 2018 . Mr. .NDIVE BUA ROBERT took over from 2018- 2023. Madam Mboke née Martha took over from 2023.
