VITAL SIGNS MONITORING SYTEM USING ARDUINO AND GSM
Abstract
Vital signs are measurements of the body’s most basic functions. Some of which include BPM (heart beats per minutes), Spo2 (blood oxygen level in percentage), ECG( electrocardiogram) and temperature[1]. Analysis of the vital signs of patients can aid in the early disease diagnosis and care.
There are many illnesses which can be diagnosed and managed by monitoring this medical condition periodically. Detection of various early-stage medical diseases can be simply done by monitoring Human vital signs, as they show the standard body’s essential functions, indicating the status of an individual’s health condition.
In many cases it so happens that patients do not receive appropriate medical treatment on time, as a result of which unexpected incidents happen due to ignorance of one’s health status. Since pulse rate and vital sign area unit are the foremost crucial parameters, an affordable device to detect such parameters is useful for human health. The realization of this project consist of the Arduino UNO microcontroller, Max30100 pulse oximeter, 0.96″ I2C Oled Display screen and GSM module 800L.
This system uses the Max30100 to measure the users beats per minute and blood oxygen saturation level and display them on the Oled screen after 15-17 seconds to obtain stable results. The user is asked to place his/her index or middle finger on the lens of the sensor. It is expected that the normal beats per minutes of an adult is 60-100 BPM and could extend to 120 [2].
Thus If the BPM read is above 60 but less than 120 after the 15-17 seconds the green led comes on and a message displays on the Oled screen “Normal BPM”. If the BPM measured is less than 60 the message display on the screen is “LOW BPM” and the yellow led comes on .If the BPM is above 120 the buzzer alarms, the red led comes on and ”HIGH BPM SEE A DOC message is displayed on the screen. The GSM module is there to send a message to a medical personal after each test (BPM<60. 60<BPM<120 and BPM > 120) for areas with limited clinics. This project is cost effective, portable and easily displaceable.
CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of study:
In Cameroon especially the northern part, hospitals are far from home settlement and the means of transportation is done mostly by donkeys in some areas which is very slow to get to a medical personnel on time just to check your vital signs, and patients with chronic diseases need regular checks up therefore adding a GSM to this device makes it even much more better because you don’t only get to check your vital signs from home but you can also grant access to a medical personnel by allowing the GSM to send messages to him each time you measure your vital signs which allows him react instantly.
Also in my community Muea to be precise there is just a single health center which makes it very difficult for the lone doctor to attend to all needs of patients.
1.2 Problem Statement:
Scarcity of hospitals in our local community poses a major issue as patients may not even know their health state. Secondly hearing impaired patients find it difficult to use a stethoscope to check their vital signs, also people who look healthy need regular checks up and there can be no better way than doing it at the comfort of their homes this saves time and money
1.3 Objective of Study:
This project is aimed to monitor some vital signs in the human body such as heart rate beats per minute and blood oxygen saturation level in percentage all these data’s are displayed on the screen the recordings are easy to read and also easy to use rather than listening to heartbeat using stethoscope, this is a good device for hearing impaired patients.
This project is portable and easily displaceable thereby patients do not have to make long trips to hospitals. For people with health challenges, the GSM module sends messages to the medical personnel each time you measure your BPM.
This reduces time wasting and saves money. The home monitoring allows your doctor to monitor how much your health improves during the day, and from day to day. This may also help your doctor determine how effectively your medication is working.
