INTRODUCTION

Definition of internship

Internship is the position of students or trainee who works in an organization, sometimes without pay in order to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for qualification.

Internship objectives

UNIT: INTENSIVE CARE

• Assist in basic resuscitation technique
• Nurse and monitor unconscious patients
• Assist in oxygen administration
• Rendering of holistic care to patients

UNIT: THEATRE

• Identify by name and functions types of operating instruments, types of sutures, needles and suture materials
• Preparation for surgical materials
• Demonstrate skill in pre and post -operative nursing care
• Monitor and report accurately on the post-operative state of patient
• Acquire skills in patients teaching and post-operative rehabilitation for post-surgery convalescence patient
• surgical washing of hands
• Demonstrate skills in applying the non-touch technique in the operating room
• Gowning and gloving
• Participate in at least six different types of surgeries
• Write the shift hand over report accurately and clearly
• Constantly monitor patient’s condition during and after surgery
• Do post-operative reanimation
• Participate in oxygen therapy

Historical/Evolutional Background of Mount Mary Hospital Buea

Mount Mary hospital Buea was created on 18th may 1967.It began down small soppo near the tea Estate as a maternity home to prevent the women from delivering at home under poor hygienic conditions.

From the beginning, the maternity home was run by the missionary sisters of the holy Rosary. The increasing number of deliveries forced the then Bishop of the Diocese of Buea, right Rev Mr Jules Peter to but part of the present Mouth Mary hospital in 1970.

However, in 1975,due to lack  personnel , the Holy Rosary sisters handed over the running of the maternity home to the sister of the saint John of God (also missionary ).In turn, the saint John of God sisters pulled out in 1990 for the same reason as the holy Rosary sisters,  These then handed over to the Franciscan missionary congregation .In 1994,the Franciscan sisters handed over to the sisters of saint Therese of the child Jesus of Buea  a group of Cameroonian sisters founded by Mr. Jules Peter in 1963.These are the sisters still running the hospital till date.

Mount Mary Maternity home being the first unit in the then Diocese of Buea other than Mary Health of African Fontem which was too far, gained popularity and being run by white Religious the place was well utilizes .It started with bed capacity of fourteen in just one building. Deliveries took place night and day and within five years, the place became too small and women were sent home barely two days after delivery.

By 1985, emergency of all form was brought to mount Mary maternity home .To save life, the sisters could not send could not send the patience away but attend to them.

Laboratory technician were employed and lab text carried out on patients. Some were given first line treatment for a couple of hours like an infusion (drip) and late sent home. The situation became unbearable and patient were admitted alongside pregnant women due delivery. By 1998, the center was now operating as a full-fledged health center.

The more people came, the more spreading about the competence of this unit. The end for a medical doctor arose , the same year one as employed and as time went on, cases like hernia, appendicitis ,which needed surgical intervention started surfacing, and the was need for an operating theatre , coupled with women having difficult delivery  which needed cesarean section.

In 1998, a theatre was created and operations started with very positive results .In 2002 an orthopedic surgeon was added to the crew and thee was a need for a theatre team to stay nearby. Mount Mary Maternity home has grown from a bed capacity of 14 to a health center with 65 best. She has been very consistent in giving quality medical care of the people of God.

The present of a pediatrician has greatly contributed to the high standard of neonatal and infant care. Other health care services offered include, internal medicine, general surgery, Gynecological and obstetric care, diagnosis services (laboratory, ultrasound, x-ray etc.).There is also a mall chapel for personal prayers and holy mass are being celebrated every morning with a thirty-minute prayer , devotion and scriptural reading. Mount Mary health center was move to a hospital officially in August 2014.
