THE IMPACT OF I.C.T ON GEOGRAPHY STUDENTS‟ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BUEA MUNICIPALITY
Abstract
This study was designed to investigate “the impact of I.C.T on Geography students‘ academic achievement in Secondary Schools in Buea municipality,”. The objectives that were used for the study were:
The objective of this study is to find out the effects of; Internet on Geography students‘ academic achievement in secondary schools in the Buea municipality, Television on geography students‘ academic achievement in secondary schools in the Buea municipality and Smartphone on geography students‘ academic achievement in secondary schools in the Buea municipality.
The research design use for the study was the descriptive research. The sample size was 100 students selected from three secondary schools in Buea municipality. The questionnaire was used to obtain information from correspondents and data were analyzed descriptively using percentages and frequencies and inferentially using person‘s product correlation.
The following results were obtained; the findings revealed the findings revealed that there is a strong positive correlation between Internet and students‘ academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea municipality.
This shows that the internet positively affects students‘ academic achievement. The findings also revealed that there is a weak correlation between Television and students‘ academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea municipality.
This indicates Television doesn‘t affect students‘ academic interest and again the findings revealed that there is a strong positive correlation between Smartphone and students‘ academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea municipality. This indicates Smartphone positively affects students‘ academic achievement.
Base on the findings on research question 1: It is recommended that, it is recommended that secondary school administrators should provide a steady Wi-Fi connection for internet service such that teachers and students can easily assess the internet. Base on the findings on research question 2:
it is recommended that parents and teachers of the respondents should strictly limit students’ time in watching TV, especially during school days and that close supervision should be maintained for the respondents to focus more on their studies. Based on the findings of research question 3, the study recommends that good strategies should be encouraged in all educational settings to promote the proper and healthy use of smartphones among students.
