TWO-MONTH INTERNSHIP AT MOUNTAIN HOTEL BUEA FOCUS AREA: FRONT OFFICE MANAGEMENT
Abstract
My internship was carried out at Mountain Hotel Buea for a period of 2 months . During my stay, I was able to involve myself in all the departments of the hotel where I was able to compare my theories learnt in school to what is actually happening in the field. The following departments I worked include, the house keeping department, Restaurant department, Bar department, laundry department and Reception department.
In my report, I made use of the Butler model/concept (1980) where he used six stages to analyse how a hotel or a destination grows which is the tourism life cycle. Also Miossec’s Model (1976) was improvised in this work. This is a tourism development model which examines the interactions of four key elements in the resort development process during different phases of a tourism destination’s evolution through time and space
Management theories such as the classical and scientific theories developed by Frederick Taylor which advocates a scientific study of tasks and the workers responsible for them and Classical administration theory that centers around the division of labor is been used in this work. And also the concept of behavioral management by George Elton Mayo.
All these theories used were well analyzed to match the ones thought in class to apprehend in my internship studies. The concept of behavioral management by George Elton Mayo. All these theories play a great rule in the hospitality and management services in a hotel. In the company, I learn of the abbreviations and acronyms which are HR which is for Human Resource GM for General manager , OM for Operation Manager.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.1 Definition and objectives of internship
An internship is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest. An internship provides the work experience that helps students put their education into practice, develop their leadership skills and give them a competitive advantage as they pursue a permanent position

1.3 Presentation of company
1.3.1 Company History of Mountain Hotel Buea
Mountain Hotel Buea is a touristic resort of class, situated at the foot of Mount Cameroon. Mountain Hotel was built in 1952 by the British colonial administration. The hotel hosted the ceremonies of the independence of the West Cameroon in 1961. After the celebration of Cameroon’s Independence, the hotel was managed by the following private individuals;
Mr. KOOF, Mr. JEAN CLAUDE THEBEAUS, Mrs. MOTAKALOKO.
The hotel was also managed by the ministry of Tourism and Leisure;
Madam MBENG, Mr. NFOR THADDEOUS, Mr. GUIDJIM, Madam ROSE MBONDE, Mr. NFOR THADDEOUS from May 2013 to October 2014 and Mrs. MBINGLO GRACE General Manager from October 2014 till date.
In 2011, the Government started renovation work at the hotel due to the forth coming celebration of Cameroon’s Independence and Reunification day in Buea, His Excellency PUAL BIYA had proclaimed.
This renovation was also carried out to host some top government officials, diplomats that were to participate in the celebration of Cameroon’s Independence.
Mountain Hotel is a four star hotel with 112 rooms and 30 chalets. These rooms are of different categories; VIP chalet, deluxe chalet, junior suit, VIP rooms Executive rooms, and standard rooms.
A transportation service, parking, swimming pool, Basketball court, 200 seats hall with 1secretariats, 25seats meeting room, gym and 300 seats banquets hall.
The General Manager is the head of the establishment, who supervised the activities of the hotel. The operation Manager is in charge with the organization and production activities of the hotel directly under the supervision of the General Manager.
1.3.2 Brief description of the various departments and their functions
Administration and Finance Department.
This department is controlled by the head of Administration and Finance Department. Service within the Administration and Finance Department include:
- Human Resource Service.
- Infirmary service
- The security service
- Transportation service
- Accounting Service
- General cashier, cashiers
- Controller food and Beverage service (F and B)
- Store Accountant.
- Recovery Service
- Marketing and communication Service
- Purchasing Service
- Store keeper.
