A ONE MONTH INTERNSHIP AT THE MOLYKO INTEGRATED HEALTH CENTRE
Prologue
In a bid to ensure nurses trained at the state universities are able to operate at any Primary Health Sector of the nation, Health Centre Internship has become an integral part of the curriculum of final year undergraduate nurses trained at any state university in Cameroon.
As a result, student nurses are sent to any Primary Health Sector: Health Centre, of the Buea Health District. They are expected to acquire essential knowledge and know how in order to adequately fit and function in the daily activities of the Health Centre, hence the Primary Health Sector of the nation.
Thus, contained in this report is a summary of a health centre internship carried out at the Molyko Integrated Health Centre.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
In an effort to ensure upon graduation, nurses trained at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Buea are able to work efficiently at any primary health sector of the nation, Health Centre Internship has been an integral aspect in the curriculum of final year students in the nursing programme. As per the organogram of health services in Cameroon, Health Centres make are the most basic level of care and hence, the first line health service of the nation.
It is expected of every Health Centre to be able to manage a verity of health of problems (according to her minimum package of activities). It is also expected of them through the referral and outreach sequence to efficiently and effectively execute her functions to the population they nourish. To which the Molyko Integrated Health Centre (MIHC) where this internship was carried out is no different.
In this light, student nurses are expected to acquire essential knowledge and know how in order to adequately fit and function in the daily activities of the Health Centre. They are also expected to acquire knowledge and skills on the function of the personnel and their respective role in the smooth functioning and nourishing of the health area. Hence, once such knowledge and skills are acquired, the ability to fit into any other health service will be a lot easier.
This report thus describes a community a Health Centre Internship carried out in the Molyko Health Area.
1.2 Duration Of Internship
This internship which began on May 14th 2019 and ended on Saturday May 31st, 2019 lasted for two weeks. Upon arrival at the Health Centre at 8:00am, we, a group of fifteen (15) students presented ourselves to the Chief of Centre (COC) Mrs Masango Mariana. Thereafter, we were introduced to the staff on duty, oriented on what is expected of us, took us round the health unit and given the green light to begin.
1.3 Aim Of Internship
The aim of this internship was to enable students acquire skills on the functioning of the primary health care sector of the nation.
1.4 Objectives Of Internship
The specific objectives of this internship were to demonstrate skills in:
- Consulting, diagnosing and treating minor ailments.
- Immunisations and family planning activities.
- Education on nutrition for pregnant women and children.
- Deliveries and care for neonates and general health education.
- Identification of the availability and affordability of essential drugs.
- Conducting effective home visits, referrals and counter referrals.
- Conducting effective health promotion and prevention activities
- Structure and composition of a health centre
- Managing a health centre
1.5 Overview Of The Molyko Health Area
Located in Fako division in the South West Region, Cameroon, precisely in the Buea Sub-Division is the Molyko Health Area. Geographically, the Molyko Health Area is made of fourteen communities (Paramount, Checkpoint, Railway 1 & 2, UB 1, 2 and 3, Malingo, Ndongo 1 & 2, Wojumba. Wojuke, Bokwai, Sossoliso and Dirty South) which are predominantly a rural. The type of settlement observed is the linear settlement. It has a population of 19711 inhabitants (hospital statistics), mainly comprising of the Bakweris.
CHAPTER TWO
ORGANIZATION AND ACTIVITIES OF THE HEALTH CENTRE
2.1 Brief Description Of The Molyko Health Centre
2.1.1 Location
The Molyko health centre is situated in Buea Sub-Division. It is one of the health centres that make up the Buea Health District. This health centre is situated about 200m from checkpoint. Further details of its location are illustrated on the map of the Molyko Health Area below.
2.1.2 History
In the year 2004 but went operational as from the 6th February 2009 with 4 staff; 3 nurses and 1 Pharmacy attendant. This health centre was created as an integrated health centre under the Molyko Health centre (MHA). It has had 3 chiefs of centre till date;
1.Mme Nkemasong Beatrice (2009 to 2014)
2.Mr Mwambo Augustine (2014 to 2016)
3.Mme Masango Mariana (2016 till date)
2.1.3 Ports of entry
Any combination of systems, persons and structures used to get into an institution or a community is a port of entry. Two main ports of entry into the MIHC exist. They are the geographical and the human port.
Geographically, to get to MIHC, there are two main motorable roads. They are; from Molyko (check point) through Sossoliso or from Malingo through Paramount. These roads are untarred and motor-able.
Similarly, to the geographic port of entry, there are two human ports of entry to the MIHC. They are those individuals through whom authorization is sought to gain access into the health centre. This is gained the COC and the chairperson of the health centre management committee.
