A REPORT ON INTERNSHIP CARRIED OUT AT THE WOMEN EMPOWERMENT CENTRE, KUMBA
CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
This report is based on the role of women empowerment and the family centre in alleviating poverty. This report is carried out from the 5 of august to the 5 of September 2015. this report is structured in 4 chapters and it was to enable me to put my theories to practice.
Chapter one of this report is about the creation, mission, objectives, activities carried out in the center, the target population, that is the population in which the center focuses on, the organizational structure of the center and the problems which is being identified in the centre.
Chapter two is all about gender issues in women empowerment and the family centre Kumba that is to talks about women and men in the development process, the machinery and strategies used to mainstream women and men in development. it also looked at the approach used and how appropriate is the approach to the WEFC
Chapter three is talking about the overview of the chosen theme from the economic perspective .also this chapter will describe the area of study which is Kumba and it will elaborate on the chosen theme and the actors and areas of intervention in the WEFC this chapter also targets victims and affected population and lastly to examine the strategies used by the WEFC to resolve problems they faced
Chapter five involves findings and discussions of major issues that is going on in the centre .finally, this chapter ends with conclusion and my own suggestions on how the WEFC can be better managed after we have refrences and appendix.
1.1 Creation
The WEFC was first known as the home economic centre and later changed to the domestic science centre. It developed over time and was created by the late madam Irene Biya on June 18, 1994. It was the first centre ever created.
Afterwards, it was later called the Ministry of social affairs and it was controlled by the mayor. In 2000,it was called the women empowerment centre .this unit is the technical arm that trains women and the girl child.
The Kumba which is the headquarters of the meme division and is being monitored by the SDO for a meme and the government delegate to the Kumba city council as a vote holder.
1.2 Mission
- The Kumba WEFC has a mission to give moral, civic and intellectual education to the women and girl children and to empower economically in order to be economically strong so that they may improve on their status and living condition in their household.
- The Kumba WEFC mission is to train women and the girl child on responsible parenthood and to protect the health of mother and child by inviting health practitionals to hold workshops that will help them to improve on the health status on their family when a woman is healthy, the children are also healthy.
- To work with other appropriate technical institutions in the divisions(Meme) and to help the women ameliorate their lifestyle so that the conditions they find themselves can become better through the trainings they get from the centers.
- The mission of the WEFC is also aim at helping women after graduation to be able to open up small businesses by granting them with loans to help them start these businesses.
- They also out to make sure that the women and girls are being educated on their rights so that they will not be discriminated and subordinated upon.
1.3 Objectives
The WEFC Kumba main objective is to empower women to learn the basic skills through training and to empower women through forum networks where they exchange ideas and experiences on best practices revolving loan schemes, group farming to help them generate income and to take care of their families.
Secondly, to educate women to form common initiative groups to help transform them into co-operations.
1.4 Activities
The WEFC Kumba have so many activities carried on in the centre. Activities like hair dressing, tailoring, computer studies hotel management and catering and other short term activities carried out.
Hair Dressing Department
This department is headed by madam Stella which trains girls and women on how to do hair, manicure and penicure. The department is functional as from 8am to 8:30pm.
Sewing Department
This department is headed by madam Nnamchou Delphine. She trains women and young girls on how to make and sew dresses. they learn internal an external decoration. In internal decoration, they learn how to make back rest, bedsheets, doorblinds, puffsetc. External decoration involve decoration of ceremonial grounds. When there is an occasion or serminers that concerns the centre, it is their responsibility to decorate the ground.
Computer Department
This department is headed by Mr Phillip Mukete. He trains and boys and girls on how to use the computer so that they can came outs as computer wizards, and be able to learn project and report writing and also, to be able to become secretariats where they can work in any organization to become secretaries in any office or institute
Hotel Management And Catery
This department is headed by Madam Nso Zenobia. She trains girls, boys and women on how to cook dishes and courses which are world wide so that after graduation, they my be able to work any where of their choice in and out of the country.
They are also tought how to make varities of pastries. They also supply it when needed. Birthday cakes are also made to the general public for those who want to celebrate their birthday. This department is hiered to cook in occasions when needed.
For example they cook and present food in weddings, death ceremonies and other occasions like their celebrated days(women’s day, rural women’s day, the day of the girl child, international women’s day and widows day)
