MALARIA TREND 2008-2014 IN BUEA HEALTH DISTRICT IN THE FAKO DIVISION
Abstract
Malaria has been a major public health problem throughout human history, particularly in the tropical and subtropical parts of the world.
It is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5 years and pregnant women in developing countries. Malaria is endemic in Cameroon with a prevalence rate of 29%.
The Cameroonian government has made many attempts to reduce the spread of malaria. Despite efforts made by the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) to curb the disease burden, the prevalent of malaria has continued to increase significantly.
Thus a study was carried out in the Buea Health District area in the South West Region of Cameroon to determine the trend of malaria from 2008 – to 2014. The study was conducted in the Regional Hospital and in Mile 16 (Bolifamba) Health Centre.
A well designed spread sheet was used to document the positive cases of Malaria in the Bolifamba Health Centre and Regional Hospital.
The spread sheet included parameters like: age, sex, pregnancy status, HIV status, residence, comments, month and year.
The data obtained were entered using Microsoft excel 2010 and Microsoft power point 2010 and the results obtained were represented in tables and graphs.
In view of the study it was concluded that malaria is highly prevalent in the Buea health district area in females than in males and in children (0 to 6years) and adults (20 to 35) than the general populations. And there are two peak seasons in which transmission is high.
