5 Surprising Facts of Sexual Intercourse during Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding refers to the practice of a mother feeding her infant with milk from her breast. This practice can be done in two ways. Is either the suckling mother directly feeds the baby from her breast or by expressing (pumping out) the milk from the breast and bottle-feeding it to the infant. This article is not entirely focused just on breastfeeding but to know if having sex while breastfeeding reduces the quality of breast milk or if it has any effect on the newborn baby.

There are common misconceptions that people hold especially breastfeeding mothers that having sex while suckling your baby contaminates the breast milk by reducing its quality, some think that since the baby consumes everything the mum eats through breast milk, the baby can equally consume sperm from the mother too while others are of the perspective that having sex with a different man apart from your husband contaminates the breast milk and can cause the baby to get sick.

Does any of the statements above surprise you?

Have you by any chance got this from anyone?

If not, the above statements shouldn’t surprise you. Have you heard of the bible verse which says my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge? Silly question right? Hahaha because any faithful Christian who reads the Bible daily will know of this verse.

The truth is: this verse equally applies here because some people make such statements because they don’t have the right information concerning the topic.

Scientifically, it has not been proven that there is a clear relationship between sperm and breast milk though sperm can negatively affect the baby when the mother has sexual intercourse with someone that has S.T.I (Sexually transmitted illness).

The truth is having sex while breastfeeding your baby does not affect the child nor the quality of the breast milk. In my own opinion, I guess these stories or statements are/were made to discourage or slow down the urge for husbands to make love to their wives immediately after delivery. This is so, for vaginal exhaustion and sores to heal.

Childbirth does not only lead to vaginal exhaustion. It could equally lead to vaginal tears, pain, fatigue, vaginal dryness, low sex urge. For this, the breastfeeding mother needs to avoid sex for a while to heal before resumption and not because it affects the baby nor the quality of breast milk.

Bear in mind that as a breastfeeding mother you can re-engage in sexual activities at any time after childbirth. There is no specific time for it unless you are going through some pains as a result of the delivery process like vaginal tears or surgical repair procedures.

Instead of asking if sex while breastfeeding has any effect on either your baby or the quality of breast milk, we should rather ask this:

Can sperm release into a breastfeeding mother affect breast milk?

The answer to this question is a YES if and only if the sperm released into the nursing mother during sexual intercourse causes her to get pregnant once more.

In this case, the milk production will be reduced significantly or even stop as her body will be preparing for the new baby growing inside her.

Apart from conceiving while nursing, the mother’s production of breast milk and the milk’s quality itself will not be affected if sperm is released into her.

Below are 5 surprising facts that only breastfeeding mothers will experience while having sex

#1 Breastfeeding can affect your sex drive

The first surprising fact to note concerning sex while breastfeeding is that as a nursing mother, your sex drive can take a double hit. Umm!!! Are you wondering how this occurs? As a nursing mother your estrogen as well as progesterone levels fall making you feel dryer than usual and lowering your libido (sex drive) respectively thus, reducing the desire to have sex.

Also, a nursing mother may not equally feel the same need for sex due to the release of oxytocin during breastfeeding as is in the case of orgasm when having sexual intercourse.

#2 You may release milk during sex

The second surprising fact to take note of concerning sex while breastfeeding is that, as a breastfeeding mother during sex milk gushes out because you release oxytocin when at orgasm and when breastfeeding hence the confusion.

You kind of mix the stuff when at this stage. So, before venturing into any sexual activity with your partner let them know before time so that when you experience it, he should not see it to be nasty.

#3 Breastfeeding can make you orgasmic

Orgasmic is relating to orgasm. Being orgasmic as an individual means you can achieve orgasm. When breastfeeding the feeling you get is not sexual but hormonal. During the process of breastfeeding, your body releases oxytocin that can cause sensations similar to orgasm in the form of intense contractions of the uterus. Thus, making you feel orgasmic.

#4 Your breasts may be out of bounds for a while

Another surprising fact to note when having sex while breastfeeding is: since you are breastfeeding, your body especially the breast responds to the current activity. So, your breast may no longer give you much sexual pleasure.

Also, your nipples may be too painful to enjoy contact. When experiencing this, you could ask your partner to try light stroking by making use of the back or palm of his hands. Gently lifting or swaying breasts and licking nipples have worked for a lot of breastfeeding women.

#5 If your nipples are stimulated, the inevitable will likely happen

This simply means that if your partner sucks or stroke your breast, you might release milk. This is due to the release of oxytocin when breastfeeding.

Concluding remarks

To summarize having intercourse when breastfeeding does not have any potential changes towards breastmilk flow. It does not affect the baby and does not affect the consistency of breast milk. The amount of breast milk production can only decrease or even cease when a nursing mother conceives again while breastfeeding. This is due to your body preparing for the new baby that is developing inside of you.

As a breastfeeding mother, there is no specific time to re-engage in sexual activities. You could only wait for a while before re-engaging in it in the case where you may have vaginal tears or surgical repair procedures.

If your partner feels as to have sex, satisfy him if you are in good health. Due to the misconceptions people have concerning sexual intercourse while breastfeeding, it has brought more harm than good in some marital homes.

Your partner might go out to get the satisfaction you deny him due to your ignorance. But this won’t happen again after coming across this article. If you find this article helpful, please share it for others to be aware for knowledge is power.
